L. H. HIGGINS.
The passing of a well known citizen is recorded in the death of L. H. Higgins, which occurred at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Mary White, about eight o'clock Tuesday morning. Mr. Higgins had been noticeably failing in health since his return from the national G. A. R. encampment at Boston in August. Cancer of the liver caused his death.
Lorenzo H. Higgins was born July 19, 1838, at Chesterfield, Hampshire Co., Massachusetts. With his oldest brother he came to Illinois, June 18, 1855, locating in Knox county, living part of the time at Oneida, and part of the time at Galesburg, until April 1859, when he went to Hoyleton, Washington county, Illinois, where on Sept. 4, 1861 he was united in marriage with Miss Susan Carter. Twelve children were born to this union, seven boys and five girls. Five of the children died in infancy, four boys and three girls growing to manhood and womanhood. Mrs. Higgins died Feb. 15, 1905, followed in about three months by her eldest son, Roy Higgins. The following named children are still alive to wit: Mrs. Celia Beckes, Wasco, Calif.; Frank S. Higgins, Spokane, Wash.; Capt. E. C. Higgins, Chicago, Ill.; Mrs. J. E. Castle, Topeka, Kansas; Mrs. Bert White, Burlingame, Kansas; Manley C. Higgins, Abbyville, Kansas.
On Sept. 4, 1861 he enlisted in Company C, 11th Illinois Infantry, re-enlisted March 31, 1864, and was transferred to the 67th U. S. Colored Infantry as Hospital Stewart, by order of the Secretary of War, and was finally discharged at Morganzia, Louisiana, Sept. 23, 1864, on account of disability, having served three years and twenty days. He was a prisoner of war eight months and two days, having been wounded and captured at Fort Donnelson, Tenn., Feb. 15, 1862, and was paroled from Libby Prison at Richmond, Virginia, on October 17, 1862.
He served three years as Township Clerk of Burlingame township and six years as City Clerk of the City of Burlingame. He united with the M. E. church at Galesburg, Ill., in March 1858, and was a member of the First Presbyterian church at Burlingame, Kansas at the time of his death, Oct. 9, 1917, having reached the age of seventy-nine years, two months and twenty days.
Funeral services will be held at 3:30 tomorrow (Friday) afternoon from the Presbyterian church and will be conducted by Rev. Davis.

Liver Detox Diet: a Prfect Cleanse For a Healthy Lifestyle

Copyright (c) 2010 Christine McVeigh

The liver is an unfortunate organ. Expectantly, it cleans up our food frenzies and exploits of coffee, alcohol, pesticides and other chemical overload but we often neglect it. The liver’s function is essential to live a healthy life and to set life’s longevity. Headaches, tiredness, overweight, bloating that lead to serious problems are rooting into the overwhelming toxins in our body–a liver cleansing is the best answer for this.

Overwhelming our bodies with toxins causes headaches, tiredness, overweight, bloating and can lead to serious disease if not addressed. A liver cleansing diet is the best answer.

And a liver detox diet has become an accepted way to support one of the largest and most functional organs in our body. So what does your liver actually do?

The liver has a lot of essential functions for day to day living. One of its basic functions is detoxification. And what a wondrous work it does. It filters toxins from the bloodstream, turning them into harmless substances that are secreted from the body. But sometimes the liver doesn’t manage to dispose of all the harmful substances – often due to overload – which can lead to future health problems.

A liver detox diet is a simple step towards a long term healthy lifestyle. This diet detox can cleanse the liver, making it more efficient in filtering toxins in the bloodstream and other organs. The goal of a liver detox diet is to eliminate all poisonous substances from your diet, dilute them with the filtered water and remove them from your body. That’s the theory.

So how does this work?

Liver detox diets are made to eliminate unnecessary toxins from the body. It can frequently take more than one attempt, especially if it is your first time to undergo a detox diet. Sometimes a series of fasting and eliminating various foods and drinks is required to help your liver function properly again. The detox diet could last for weeks or months depending on your health condition, determination and what level of health you are pleased with.

Eating natural foods is one of the precise ways to start it. Kick off your usual processed food in-takes and switch to organic foods especially lots of fresh fruits and vegetables. Introduce a set of foods that help the liver function properly. These foods include broccoli, cabbages, radishes and artichokes. They support the functions of the liver and regenerate liver cells. And remember; always wash your fruits and veggies carefully. You don’t want to add more pesticides to your diet.

The most beneficial liver detox diet asks you to eat mostly fresh fruits and vegetables. These healthy detox foods put less strain on your liver while feeding your body with the raw nutrition it needs.

Some protein is included in the diet – but very little. It won’t actually last long because most liver detox diets only last days and rarely weeks.

Aid your liver to stabilize an effective function. Try a liver detox diet and regenerate yourself to a vigorous lifestyle.

Is Cod Liver Oil a Safe Way to Get Vitamin D?

Posted: 29 Apr 2011 12:43 PM PDT

Did You Know That Vitaminn D is Cod Liver Oil?

One excellent source of vitamin D is cod liver oil. But first lets discuss exactly where vitamin D comes from, besides cod liver oil.

Vitamin D is a fat-soluble steroid hormone precursor that contributes to the maintenance of normal levels of calcium and phosphorus in the bloodstream. Strictly speaking, it is not a vitamin since human skin can manufacture it, but it is referred to as one for historical reasons. It is often known as calciferol One cup of vitamin D fortified milk supplies about one-fourth of the RDA (Required Daily Allowance).

Twenty minutes of fully body exposure to sunlight equals about 20,000 IU (international units)

As we age we need even more vitamin D. Here is the daily chart

* Ages 19-50 – 200 IU

* Ages 51-69 – 400 IU

* Ages 70 and above – 600 IU

One tablespoon is about 1,400 IU of vitamin D, therefore one teaspoon is 450 IU (3 teaspoons = 1 tablespoon)

Most cod liver oil comes from Norway and the other Scandinavian countries; where it has been part of the diet for decades. The immune-boosting benefits of the oil may be only now coming to light in this country, but they’ve been common knowledge in those countries. You’ll still find that most moms and grandmothers keep a jar of cod liver oil in their cupboard. If you take or decide to use cod liver oil to get your vitamin D, which l think is an excellent option, keep a few things in mind.

First, if you sunbathe 20 minues a day, 3 times a week, you may not need to supplement with cod liver oil.

If you do not sunbathe a lot, I would suggest having your doctor check your vitamin D levels before you take cod liver oil; you may need to add vitamin D as a supplement. Second, not all cod liver oil is the same. In fact, most products are worthless, either because they’re rancid or because of the way they’re produced. Also, much like olive oil, cod liver oil is marketed in a couple of different grades. Regular cod liver oil from the top of the barrel is a lighter oil containing less in the way of vitamins and essential fatty acids. Obviously therefore this means that the oil at the bottom of the barrell is a higher quality.

Keep in mind that vitamin D is a fat-soluble vitamin. If you have difficulty digesting fats (or have had your gallbladder removed and aren’t taking bile salts), you will have a more difficult t!me using vitamin D from cod liver oil. Cod liver oil has also been shown to work better when there is an adequate amount of saturated fats in the diet as well. A high-quality butter works well in this respect.

Liver Cleanse/Detox AND SUPPORT: East and West

Posted: 28 Apr 2011 12:44 PM PDT

Meal Plan for Liver Cleansing Detox

The liver, kidney and colon work hand in hand to eliminate toxic substances through urination and bowel movements. In order for the liver to do its job, you have to feed it the right nutrients and enough of them. Otherwise, the liver becomes sluggish and slows down the process of expelling the harmful substances that shouldn’t be in your body. Get the nutrients you need and maintain proper liver functions, by planning healthy meals and a regular liver cleansing detox.

Every day we consume foods, liquids, participate in activities and breathe poor quality air that leads to an under-performing liver. For example, smoking adds toxins to the liver, and makes it weak. Over time, the impact of smoking will be damaged liver cells. If you’re a smoker, you must do what you can to stop in order to protect your liver. A liver cleansing diet improves liver performance, and helps to keep other important organs that assist the liver in good health, such as the gall bladder, heart and kidneys. When the liver malfunctions, it cannot provide needed support to other vital organs in your body, which is why it may result in other health related issues.

Develop a liver cleansing detox plan to eliminate the toxins that you intake, sometimes without even realizing it. The first step is to change the way you eat. You’ll promote great liver health if you stay away from chemicals and toxins in your diet, which often means restricting your diet to organic foods that are free of additives and colorings. Next, evaluate your budget as you analyze different liver detox programs. Choose a liver cleansing detox and meal plan that you can afford, and keep in mind that you’ll have to detox once a year. Finally, you can help to remove toxins from your body prior to a liver cleansing detox program, by drinking such things as fresh apple or grapefruit juice. Share your plan with your physician, to ensure that your dietary and liver cleansing plan won’t harm your body due to preexisting health conditions.

Evaluation is a key part of the liver cleansing detox plan. You should analyze the effect of the cleansing on your body. If it doesn’t produce a positive effect or you suffer severe side effects, you should stop doing it. Consult your physician on how to proceed. If it works out well, then consider repeating it after six months. Maintain a proper diet and exercise regularly after a liver cleansing diet, to see even better results.

Body detoxification can be started with reducing your consumption of foods that has high
quantity of toxins such as processed foods, alcohol, artificial sugar, and coffee and
increase your amount of intake of fresh fruits and vegetable. Visit livercleansingdetox.com and learn more about liver cleansing detox plan.

Liver & Gall Bladder Body Cleanse Testimony – (Natural Recipe to Remove Gallstones & Liver Stones)

Posted: 28 Apr 2011 12:43 AM PDT

Your Liver & Weight Loss: What Do They Have in Common?

Your liver is the most important organ in your body. Without it, you would die within 24 hours. But what does the liver have to do with weight loss? I bet you’ll be surprised.

One of the primary purposes of the liver is to filter the blood, cleaning out anything that could be toxic to your body. This would include things like pharmaceutical drugs (yes, your body sees those as toxic), undigested foods, alcohol, viruses, bacteria, ingested chemicals (these can enter the body orally or via the skin, like pesticides, lotions, deodorants, make-up, hairspray). The liver is also involved in metabolism, hormone balance, and immune functions.

Imagine pouring something through a mesh strainer. At first the liquids run through easily, but eventually, if there are too many solids, the strainer gets clogged and the liquid has no where to go. If the liver has to work overtime to cleanse toxins, a similar situation can happen to the liver. It gets clogged with toxins and at that point fails to run efficiently.

When the liver becomes clogged, every organ in your body is impacted and efforts to lose weight are blocked. Here are just some of the impacts:

–It can cause an accumulation of sodium which can raise blood pressure.

–It can cause water retention which adds body weight.

–It can cause a hormone imbalance which makes us moody.

–It also can’t regulate glucose making us hypoglycemic which in turn can result in sugar cravings, weight gain, and Candida overgrowth.

–It cannot process toxins out of the body, so they escape into the blood stream which creates an immune response by the body. If this continues, then your immune system becomes burdened. This in turn can result in autoimmune diseases like arthritis.

–It cannot burn body fat making all of your weight loss efforts a complete waste of time.

Doing a liver and gallbladder cleanse can help alleviate this situation and aid in your weight loss efforts. It is recommended that you precede the liver / gallbladder cleanse with a colon cleanse. If your colon isn’t operating efficiently (constipation, fewer than 1-3 bowel movements per day), then the toxins will be released from the liver into the blood stream rather than flushed out of the body through the colon.

There are numerous cleansing programs on the market. Do your homework and find one that is backed by a company with a good reputation, positive product reviews and customer testimonials.

Once you have cleansed your liver, a good daily practice is to begin your morning with a glass of water with a wedge of fresh squeezed lemon juice. This will support your digestive organs by cleansing and activating the liver. Additionally, consider reducing the toxic load by avoiding some of the stressors mentioned above.

Don’t take your liver for granted. Although it can regenerate, if it isn’t functioning properly, you won’t either!

Which disease need liver transplant?

There are numerous diseases of liver which may need transplant. By and large progressive and irreversible disease process leading to end stage liver disease need transplant. All the diseases are treated with drugs first and transplant is the last option. Transplant is needed when drugs fail to act; and expectancy and quality of life is predicted to be short.

Following are the diseases which may require transplant.

1)      Viral Hepatitis induced cirrhosis –

a.       Hepatitis B

b.      Hepatitis C

2)      Alcohol induced cirrhosis

3)      Inborn errors of metabolism

a.       Hemochromatosis (increased producing and deposition of iron in body mainly liver)

b.      α1 – Antitrypsin deficiency (absence of chemical, important for maintaining function of lungs and liver)

c.       Wilson’s disease (increased production and deposition of copper in the body mainly liver)

d.      Glycogen storage disease type I/ III

4)      Cholestatic disease

a.       Biliary atresia (birth defect leading to failure of development of bile draining tubes)

b.      Primary biliary cirrhosis (obstruction to flow of bile primarily in the liver)

c.       Familial cholestasis Byler’s syndrome, anteriohepatic dysplasia (congenital stasis of bile inside liver)

d.      Cystic fibrosis, Insipissated bile syndrome leading to cirrhosis.

e.       Primary sclerosing cholangitis (scarring, narrowing and inflammation of biliary tree)

f.        Secondary biliary cirrhosis (irreversible liver damage due to obstruction to bile tubes from outside the liver)

5)      Acute fulminant hepatic failure

a.       Drug induced –paracetamol poisoning

b.      Fulminant Hepatitis A or E (severe form of liver injury which results in failure of liver)

6)      Vascular

a.       Budd Chiari Syndrome (blocked of hepatic veins)

7)      Congenital abnormalities

a.       Urea cycle enzyme deficiency

b.      Homozygous hypercholesterolemia

c.       Primary hyperoxaluria type

d.      Familial amyloidotic polyneuropathy

8)      Developmental abnormalities

a.       Polycystic liver disease (formations of multiple fluid filled cavities inside liver)

b.      Caroli’s disease (birth defect of biliary radicles, dilatations inside liver leading to failure to drain bile)

9)      Tumors

a.       Hepatocellular carcinoma (cancer of liver)

b.      Metastasis to liver (cancer spread from other organs)

Best Way – Liver Cirrhosis Causes

Cirrhosis of the liver is the end stage for a variety of liver diseases. The term cirrhosis is a symptom that refers to the orange or tawny color of a diseased liver and is not a specific disease in itself. Although it is most closely associated with alcoholism, the most common cause of liver cirrhosis in the United States is now hepatitis. Here’s how to prevent liver cirrhosis.

Scarring of the liver, or cirrhosis, occurs in people who suffer from chronic liver disease. Cirrhosis limits important liver function such as the elimination of toxins and pathogens, the regulation of protein in the blood and the production of bile necessary for the absorption of fats and vitamins. While cirrhosis is an irreversible condition, early treatment with gentle, natural medicine can help to prevent further damage to the liver. Read on to learn more about how to treat cirrhosis with natural medicine.

Cirrhosis is a condition that results from irregular function and structure of the liver. It is a complication that arises from various liver diseases and a result of chronic liver diseases. Some forms of liver cirrhosis are life threatening and extremely dangerous. There are many different causal factors associated with liver cirrhosis, and there are also some idiopathic cases (situations in which the causes are not understood).

• Chronic Viral Hepatitis: -Chronic viral hepatitis is an ailment in which either hepatitis B or C infects the liver for a prolonged period of time, such as years. Some people with hepatitis B virus get chronic hepatitis, which results in destruction of the liver that is progressive and ultimately, cirrhosis of the liver.
• Genetic Conditions: – There are some inherited disorders that can cause cirrhosis of the liver. These disorders can cause toxic substances to build up within the liver which can cause both cirrhosis and tissue destruction. This can happen as a result of Wilson’s Disease, which is characterized by an unusual buildup of copper, or excessive amounts of iron, known as hemachromatosis.
• Biliary atresia: – There is a rare condition in which babies are born without having bile ducts. The condition is known formally as biliary atresia. Biliary atresia can lead to cirrhosis, while some babies are born with insufficient amounts of a crucial enzyme that regulates sugars, which leads to sugar buildup and cirrhosis as well.
• Primary Sclerosing Cholangitis: – Primary sclerosing cholangitis (abbreviated commonly as PBC) can cause liver cirrhosis. This is a very rare disease that is often found within colitis patients. With this condition, the large bile ducts located outside of the liver become blocked and narrowed, and experience inflammation. Blocking the bile flow can cause bile ducts infections as well as jaundice (the yellowing of the skin and the eyes) and ultimately cause liver cirrhosis.
• Autoimmune Hepatitis: – Autoimmune hepatitis is a kind of liver disease that results from an immune system irregularity that is much more common with females. The unusual immune system activity with this condition results in inflammation that is progressive and that causes hepatocyte (liver cell) damage, which causes cirrhosis of the liver eventually.

Fatty Liver Disease Treatment – Fatty Liver Bible

Fatty liver, also known as steatosis, is the infiltration of fat inside the liver cells. Fatty liver may also bear the name “Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease” or NAFLD. Although the build up of fat in the liver usually causes no damage by itself, it can be a signal that other more harmful conditions are at play. More often, it is associated with steatohepatitis which can scar and harden the liver, and eventually lead to liver cirrhosis. In other words, the consequences of fatty liver disease can be so serious that early signs should be watched out for. What, then, is the best fatty liver disease treatment?

The first step to avoid having a fatty liver is to reduce or eliminate alcohol consumption. Another is to control blood sugar, because fatty liver disease may also occur with metabolic conditions such as obesity and diabetes mellitus. In fact, fatty liver disease happens mostly because of high-glycemic foods in the diet. Examples of these foods include white bread, white rice, and concentrated sugars which raise blood sugar fast. The way to avoid this is, of course, to implement a low-carb diet that is rich in fruits and vegetables.

There are customizable diet plans specific for fatty liver disease. You need not become a vegetarian if you want to avoid getting a fatty liver. All you have to do is so include healthy meals in your diet, commit yourself to weight loss programs and lifestyle changes, and make use of any available support group that will encourage you to go on.

You can even seek the help of wellness experts, personal trainers, and life coaches if you want. It is a serious challenge, I know, but if you own the commitment, you will see how it will change your life for the better.

These are just a few examples of fatty liver disease treatment.
